'Rebel' Rod's Non-Music Related Rambling - What a “Kroc” – Troubling attitude at Kerrville’s Kroc Center

By 'Rebel' Rod Ames

DO NOT CANCEL your membership at the Kroc Center! There will be $105 cancellation fee deducted from your credit card or checking account. I do not have a problem with that, although it does seem quite pricey for any organization, especially during these particularly difficult economic times, to put a seemingly elevated fee for such a small task as taking a member off your list.

The distressing thing about this was not really the fee. I can rebound from an unexpected deduction from my checking account, it was the cavalier attitude taken by the representatives of the Kroc Center who I suspect, when not working at the Kroc center, are fellow citizens and neighbors.

The employees more than likely are simply doing what they are told. In fact, she actually used the words, “these are our standards”. Therefore, their “standards” obviously come from upper management or corporate.

The manager I spoke to repeatedly stated, “That according to the agreement you signed…..", which was not my point at all.

My point was that if they had practiced good customer service and politely reminded me at the time of my cancellation that there would be a $105 cancellation fee, my membership would still be in existence. I definitely would not have cancelled my membership until the membership period had ended. They would still have me as a customer, and had the opportunity to keep me as a customer longer term, and I would not be writing this letter. Why? Because they would have done the right thing, which will always hold a lasting impression on this writer.

I work for a very customer service oriented company, and I am pretty far down the chain of command, but I, in my plebian position at the company, could have gotten a $105 refund authorized, because in the end, a happy customer is worth far more than $105.

Because of not being able to get anywhere, and not even getting so much as phone call back from their director, I was left with no alternative other than to warn my fellow neighbors who may be thinking of cancelling their memberships, of this exorbitant fee that will be taken from their credit card or checking account.

Incidentally, my teenage son is on the same membership and I did not cancel him from the membership. Due to my dissatisfaction with The Kroc Center right now, I would love to take him off, I just cannot afford another $105 at this time.

I was merely trying to convince them to remind people of this cancellation fee when they call to cancel. The manager I spoke to either did not understand or did not care. She just kept robotically repeating the same thing over and over again, “That according to the agreement you signed…” Clearly, my grievance fell on deaf ears.

I love the Kerrville area and I adore its people. However, the inconsiderate attitude the management possess at The Kroc Center in Kerrville is not conducive of the people of Kerrville, The Salvation Army, or who the Kroc’s are.

At least I hope not.

‘Rebel’ Rod’s Review – Mick Brady’s self released “Small Town Trouble” – Truly, has the potential to bridge genres and generations

By ‘Rebel’ Rod Ames

Until recently, the name Mick Brady meant absolutely nothing to me. I had never heard the name and sadly, had never heard his incredible music.

I have never met Mick face to face, but after listening to his songs, and reading about what they mean to him, I would like too. I know I’d like him.

The name of the record is “Small Town Trouble”, named for the first track on the album. As he puts it, “The song is about the narrow-mindedness and pressure to conform that is found in many communities.”It is a tune regarding how appealing and typical things look superficially. However, if you look a little closer one begins to see that what appears to be so average at the surface can be, in reality, tragically ugly. How many of us as an individual have put on a façade? Someone asks how we are doing. “Fine”, we reply. When in reality we are being ripped to shreds internally. This tune speaks of that but is downright poetic about it.

Every song on the LP is deeply personal to Mr. Brady and based on something that touched him at some point in his life. As a result, when you hear his words coming from his simple yet soothing voice, you feel it.

Listen carefully and you’ll be taken on somewhat of a journey through the artist’s life. Whether it is about an interview he heard on the radio (the title track,” Small Town Trouble”) or a tune about friends of his parents that he grew up around, discovering they weren’t just quirky, but mentally ill and all but forgotten about by the ones that were supposed to care about them. At least that was the promise (“I Remember the Rare 'Aul Times”).

The stories he tells paint a vivid picture in your mind that will remain there for a long time, leaving you with the feeling that you truly know the artist. He shares his experiences, his feelings about certain events, his weaknesses, his strengths, and ultimately his hope with us.

Peter Eades eloquently produced the album as well as playing the drums, bass, guitars, mandolin, banjo, keyboards, and harmonica, a very busy fellow indeed. His fingerprints can literally be found all over the album.

Of course, Mick Brady sings on the record and is backed up on vocals by Philip Gargan. In addition, Paul Lynch plays keyboards on a couple tracks as well.

Overall, this is a delightful record that will be enjoyed across many genres and generations. What I mean is that I could play a track or two on my eclectic radio show and believe most of my listeners would love it. However, I could also play it for my 80 something parents and their friends, who would equally enjoy it [the record]. It truly has the potential to bridge genres and generations.

"Small Town Trouble" is self-released and is available now. It can be purchased by going to Mick Brady's website.

‘Rebel’ Rod’s Reviews – Gina Sicilia’s “Can’t Control Myself” - An amazing record on Vizztone Records

By ‘Rebel’ Rod Ames

First off, let me apologize to a couple of artists (and you probably know who you are). I was in the middle of your reviews when I received this one.

It appeared I had very little time to review Philadelphia’s own, Gina Sicilia’s latest, “Can’t Control Myself”, so I had to move the two I was working on to, not the back burner, but over to the side briefly. I am confident that once these artists hear Ms. Sicilia, they will certainly understand.

From the very first track, “Addicted”, I was addicted.

Her voice is, like Laura Dern’s character Lula said to Nicholas Cage’s character Sailor in the David Lynch film, Wild At Heart, “…hotter than a Georgia asphalt” (Sorry, I’ve used this comparison before, but it certainly applies here). It is extremely saucy to say the very least! “Addicted” is about a girl who is addicted to, by the looks of her video and the strong lyrics, alcohol. However, you could perceive the topic of this well-crafted tune to be just about anything.

We get addicted to food, chemicals, even love. It’s when we cross the barrier of a healthy relationship with whatever, to an unhealthy one. I’ll tell you what I think though-it’s a great song from the first note to the last, and is something I’ll be continuing to listen too long after this review is published!

The album is like that all the way through. At first, I thought this was going to be a great blues record, and it is, but as good as that would be, as I progressed through listening to it, it became apparent that this record offers so much more than that. It’s blues, it’s soul, it’s rock ‘n roll (from the roots), even a little “real” or “alt” country. She absolutely defies being pigeonholed.

I couldn’t help but think about Linda Ronstadt or Tracy Nelson a little while listening to her velvety smooth voice wailing throughout this wonderful new record. However, it is not because she sounds like them. It’s because her voice is of that caliber!

Whenever possible, I give the credits for the band, but in this case, could not find them listed on any of her bios, but the guitars are incredible throughout and I love the Hammond organ that lies softly underneath everything, adding an air of mysteriousness. She has a wonderful band backing her outstanding voice.

Ms. Sicilia’s “Can’t Control Myself” is available now on Vizztone Records.

‘Rebel’ Rod says check it out – Gina Sicilia certainly qualifies as “From Under the Basement” material.

'Rebel' Rod's Revelations - Sara Hickman's new "Best of Times" featuring Willie Nelson, Robert Earl Keen and more is available today

Texas Luminaries Pay Tribute to Hickman with This New 38-Track Compilation to Benefit Theatre Action Project (TAP)

Amy Black
Nashville, Tenn. - With an unwavering dedication to increased awareness and funding for arts education and a passion for art and the creative process, Sara Hickman provides a unique and powerful voice for women, her generation and the value and importance of the arts in school. It is no wonder more than 30 Texas music legends including Willie Nelson, Rhett Miller, Shawn Colvin, Robert Earl Keen and dozens more have come together to both pay tribute and add to her philanthropic endeavors with The Best of Times.  Sales of this compilation CD, available nationwide TODAY, August 23, 2011, will benefit Theatre Action Project (TAP), a non-profit that brings art, music and theatre to Central Texas schools.
The 38-track double disc project was inspired by a recent slash in arts funding by Texas State Legislature. “I wanted to utilize my position as the Official State Musician of Texas to promote families being creative together,” says Hickman. “Many times this starts with children bringing home ideas they learn at school.”

The compilation CD was created to raise funds for TAP and help the organization take the arts and theatre back into the schools. Hickman goes on to say, “I knew thousands and thousands of Texas children were missing out on what art, music, theater, dance and writing can bring to their lives.”  Hickman’s goal is to raise $250,000 for TAP and share her story with Texas state legislature on Arts Day in an effort to have arts funding fully reinstate in Texas schools.

In addition to her work with Theatre Action Project, Sara has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for: the Dallas Dance for Life; House the Homeless; Bryan's House; AAIM; PETA; Amnesty International; homeless shelters, SPCA, Mothers' Milk Bank, TCADP; visited Romania to deliver clothing, money and supplies to orphans; and personally raised more than $50,000 for the Hill Country Youth Ranch in Ingram, Texas, a safe haven for severely abused children. The HCYR then opened the Sara Hickman Children’s Fund, which accepts matching grants and buys musical instruments, dance shoes, and art supplies for the children of the ranch. Sara's involvement in music and art therapy continued through ARTS (Artistic and Recreational Therapies), leading her to perform for children in burn units, AIDS and stroke victims, and in psychiatric units, where she utilized her talents and love to help with the healing process. Lastly, in 2004, Sara was the National Ambassador for Half Price Books visiting hospitals and schools across the U.S., helping to promote literacy where she performed and read to children.

Sara Hickman has produced over 15 albums (for adults and children) throughout her career and has appeared several times on both VH-1 and NBC’s “Tonight Show.” She has won numerous awards for her music and humanitarian efforts, including first place in the USA Film Festival for her self-produced independent video, “Joy,” about a homeless woman she befriended. This year, Hickman will star in a new film, When Angels Sing, based on the book by local Renaissance man, Turk Pipkin. The all-star cast includes Harry Connick, Jr., Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett, and Hickman’s daughter Lili.

A non-profit, TAP is made up of professionally trained artists and educators that work in partnership with schools and communities to lead unique and engaging arts programs which allow young people to learn critical life skills, gain tools for creative expression and have successful experiences that build self-esteem and confidence.

'Rebel' Rod's Revelations - Buck Owens' pre-Capitol Records recordings collected on Buck Ownes - "Bound for Bakersfield 1953-1956", due on Rockbeat Records on September 27

Owens’ tracks for Pep, Chesterfield and La Brea Records, recorded in Hollywood and Bakersfield, illustrate the roots of Owens’ sound with collaborators like Fuzzy Owen and Corky Jones
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Buck Owens is synonymous with the Bakersfield sound of country music that also gave rise to the Maddox brothers and Rose, Tommy Collins, Ferlin Husky and in later years Merle Haggard.

Owens’ earliest recordings for independent labels in Southern California — ahead of his lucrative career on Capitol Records in the ’60s and ’70s — have been collected on Buck Owens — Bound for Bakersfield 1953-1956: The Complete Pre-Capitol Collection, scheduled for release on September 27 on RockBeat Records through e0ne Entertainment. The suggested retail price is $14.98.

The 24-song reissue opens with selections from his first known session in 1953 in Hollywood, which produced two singles (“Down on the Corner of Love” b/w “It Don’t Show on Me” and “The House Down the Block” b/w “Right After the Dance”) on Claude Caviness’ Pico Rivera-based Pep Records. It closes with a 1956 Bakersfield session that produced singles on Chesterfield Records and an album on La Brea Records. Included are previously unreleased alternate takes including an overdubbed version of “Hot Dog.”

Liner notes for Bound for Bakersfield were written by Rich Kienzle, a music historian with special expertise in West Coast country. RockBeat VP or A&R James Austin and Jim Shaw of Buck Owens’ Buckaroos compiled the collection.

According to Kienzle’s notes, “Buck Owens was 21 when he rolled into Bakersfield from Phoenix in May, 1951, a part-time musician and laborer who had his eye on a musical career. It would take some time. There were lessons to be learned and dues to be paid. But in the final analysis, the Buck of legend, of the raw honky-tonk vocals, catchy commercial tunes, twangy Fender Telecasters and churning, aggressive ‘freight train’ rhythms was forged in Bakersfield's honky tonks and recording studios there and in L.A. from 1951 to 1957.”

Owens is best known for his later Capitol Records hits like “Tiger by the Tail,” “Foolin’ Around” and “Act Naturally.” But his ’50s pre-Capitol recordings find him working in a honky tonk milieu (except for the rockabilly tracks such as the 1957 single “Hot Dog”). One can hear early flashes of the distinctive sound he'd perfect at Capitol, the sound that made him famous.

With his indie singles earning him both regional recognition and buzz from A&R departments at both Capitol and Columbia Records, Owens passed on New York’s Columbia (whose producer told Owens to “hold on” until he could come to the West Coast) in favor of Hollywood-based Capitol Records, which made him an offer on the spot. Owens was known to Capitol from his work on sessions by one of the originators of the Bakersfield sound, Tommy Collins. Buck’s own first Capitol session in 1957 aimed for a pop-rock audience, trying, as he later said, “to make the biggest hillbilly in Bakersfield into somethin’ he wasn’t.” In 1959, he was recorded as his true, honky-tonking self, with great success.

Kienzle notes, “Buck Owens was always known for his spot-on instincts. Clearly, his expectation that he’d have no recording career beyond Pep and the odd demo or two was a rare miscalculation. These raw, primal performances, blended with hundreds of hours onstage at the Blackboard (club in Bakersfield), were essentially part of a long rehearsal for the fame that came soon enough.”
