'Rebel' Rod's Ramblings - Happy Mondays, but not a very happy ending -

By 'Rebel' Rod Ames

I suppose it would be no surprise that I'm completely unaware of this band's existence until just a few minutes ago, but I was looking for something, perhaps a video, that could apply to Monday, you know, since it's Monday?

Well, I ran across this band, Happy Mondays, that had a fairly large degree of success, that is, until their band leader/vocalist Shaun Ryder tore the band apart. Apparently, while at a meeting with their record company, he walked out for some "Kentucky Fried Chicken" (drug speak for heroin to the band) and never returned. This incident marked the deconstruction of the band.

I found their material interesting and you have to wonder - what would have happened had Mr. Ryder gotten clean?

Anyway, here's Happy Mondays performing "Hallelujah" -

  1. Listen to the album, 'Bummed'. It's absolutely brilliant and sounds like nothing else!

  2. If you can catch the film '24 hour party people' then it'd be interesting for you to watch, shows the plights of a little record company in Manchester which had the Happy Mondays and New Order/Joydivision on theirs books. Top film. Top band. Top Scene.

    Rave on Madchester.
