'Rebel' Rod's Ramblings, Reviews, & Revelations - Trombone Shorty's "Backatown" is back at # 1

Trombone Shorty is nominated for a GRAMMY, Six Offbeat Awards,
and is Elmore magazine’s cover story,
“Bound for Glory — 11 Artists To Watch in 2011”

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — In its 38th week of release, Trombone Shorty’s Grammy-nominated Backatown returns to #1 on Billboard magazine’s Contemporary Jazz CD chart this coming week. Backatown went immediately to #1 on its release in April of 2010 and held the top position for nine straight weeks, rarely straying from the Top Five in the past nine months.

Aided by an intensive tour schedule that is spreading Trombone Shorty’s patented high-energy Supafunkrock sound to five continents, Backatown has recently benefited from praise on many Best of 2010 year-end lists including being named the #1 album among the great Louisiana-based releases of the year by New Orleans’ OffBeat magazine, who also nominated Trombone Shorty for six of their Best of the Beat Awards.

Featured on the cover of Elmore magazine as part of its story “Bound for Glory — 11 Artists To Watch in 2011,” Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews looks back on his defining successes of 2010, plans for 2011, and discusses maturing as an artist: “We toured hard!  We jammed with Lenny Kravitz in Paris, opened for Jeff Beck in London. Played with Dave Matthews in the States. Plus, we put out an album, Backatown.” On his plans for 2011, the just-turned 25-year-old New Orleans singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist and all-around musical powerhouse reveals, “We’re going back into the studio and back out on the road. We just want to grow.”

In the current Mojo magazine story “The Best Thing I’ve Heard All Year,” stars pick their favorite tracks of 2010. The legendary Jeff Beck said, “This year I had the great privilege to hear for the first time Troy ‘Trombone Shorty’ Andrews play at an after-show for the New Orleans Jazz Festival. I was completely blown away. Troy and his band have just supported me on some U.K. dates. A sensational group of musicians. Trombone Shorty is one to watch!”

Trombone Shorty performs on Jeff Beck’s forthcoming Les Paul tribute CD/DVD, Rock and Roll Party To Honor Les Paul (Eagle Rock/ATCO), available on February 22.

Trombone Shorty is also part of two other 2010 Grammy-nominated projects: his version of “Ooh Pooh Pah Doo” is on Tremé, Music From the HBO Original Series, Season One, a nominee for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media; and he plays with Dr. John on “Down in New Orleans” (from Disney’s The Princess and the Frog), nominated for Best Song Written for Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media.

Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue’s Backatown tour continues this spring and summer with more dates across the European continent, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, and all over Canada and the U.S.
