Lest you forget, The Chessman were a band out of Dallas fronted by a couple of kids. One from Oak Cliff named Jimmie Vaughan, the other out of Irving, by the name of Doyle Bramhall.
The song was "I Need You There" with Mr. Bramhall's extremely recognizable, from the throat, voice singing lead. Interestingly enough, you can also hear Mr. Vaughan's just as distinct style of plucking at his guitar. It had not completely evolved into what we are privileged to hear today but it is definitely there.
Hearing this little blast from the past got the gears turning in what is left of my brain, giving me the idea for my show this Saturday night KOOK 93.5. Yes, the voice is almost back, so long as I don't talk to much, and that will be good for this show. I don't believe I've done a "mostly" Texas Blues show, so that is what we're going to do.
I will definitely be playing that Chessmen tune, along with Lightnin' Hopkins, Jimmy Reed, Jimi Hendrix...
"What?" you say. "Jimi Hendrix is from Seattle!"
True, but The Chessmen, on at least one occasion, opened for Hendrix at Memorial Auditorium in Dallas (I think) and legend has it that SRV, at one time thought he may have been a reincarnation of Mr. Hendrix. These two items alone, get him a spot on just about any Texas Blues Show. Besides, it's my show and I get to do just about whatever I want, within FCC guidelines of course.
That's enough for now though. Just tune in tomorrow night on KOOK 93.5 from 10pm until 2am, if you happen to live in or around Junction, Texas or simply click the KOOK 93.5 button above for the web stream. You will not be sorry.
See ya on the radio, and why don't we listen to Jimmy Vaughan and Omar Kent Dykes playing "Bad Bad Boy" by Jimmy Reed -
